☆ - I want our characters to stargaze

Obito slipped a small note under Rin’s office door. “Meet me at the top of the Hokage monument tonight at nine,” it said, “There’s supposed to be a meteor shower—I’d like some company.”

He wrung his hands for a moment, scrubbing his fingers roughly through his hair. “You can do this,” he muttered to himself, before turning on his heel and walking—just a little too quickly—down the hall and out of the hospital wing.

The note was an incredibly sweet gesture, somewhat endearing to Rin that even after the time they’d known each other, his feelings were something he couldn’t voice out in the open. Was it shyness? Fear of Rejection? Rin wasn’t sure, she’d been nothing but supportive towards her teammate and she wasn’t blind to the shine he’d taken to her so early on even in their genin days due to it.

She looked down at the paper again with a smile before folding and tucking it into her pocket. There was still time for her to get changed into something a bit warmer for an evening of stargazing, a practical necessity especially atop the Hokage mountain which while a good vantage point, was quite exposed to the elements.

Maybe a combination of her own nerves mixed with her penchant for punctuality, for Rin showed up at the monument at 8.30, considerably early, even for her.

Do you think he’d actually still do the thing? My Obito would be… very, very damaged, but he’d honestly consider aborting it. His goals are altruistic overall, but he has a very selfish streak in there.

You know, I actually have no freakin’ clue what he’d do. There are 3 main possibilities though.

  1. He’s enough of a ‘better world for everyone’ altruist + Madara’s indoctrination on top of that to still go through with the I.T. and figures he’ll be reunited with her in the genjutsu world anyway, sooo….
  2. RIN IS ALIVE ABORT MISSION I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED TO KONOHA Obito.exe has encountered an error and needs to shut down and he abandons Madara’s plan entirely
  3. OR he’s nutso enough to think that this Rin must be a fake, refuses to believe that she was alive this whole time, and Isobu is fed to the gedo statue, killing her.

I have no clue which of those canon Obito would do, and I feel like the choice made would vary between muses, but 1 outta 3 the odds are not in her favour.

I would die for you."

Don’t,” Obito blurted, and his voice broke with the urgency of it. “Rin, please don’t talk like that.”

He could see it vividly in his mind’s eye, blood bursting in fat bubbles from her Cupid’s bow lips, a gurgling rattle as the breath left her lungs, the wash of corpse-gray replacing the healthy pink of her. It turned his stomach to think of, but even worse, it shook something deep within him. Like some great beast flexing razor-sharp claws in its sleep, a whispering voice telling him, wordless, this way lies madness—lose her, and lose yourself. It felt like a swallow of ice-water, like looking into the blank eyes of a corpse.

Rin’s death was a precipice. It was doom, the doorway to unfathomable horror.

Obito gulped, shaking his head. “Rin, if anything, I’ll protect you so you’ll never have to. I’ll die protecting you, so just—just please stay safe.”
